Six-Thousand-Hit Blog.
Due to a drastically reduced posting rate, it's taken six months and two weeks to reach this milestone since the five thousandth hit (the first time the length between milestones has gone up), and three years, eight months and nine days overall. This time, the lucky fellow hails from Hollywood, Florida, which sort of disappoints me because over the past week alone people have dropped in from Latvia, Guatemala, Mexico, Romania, Italy (twice!), and even Canada. But USA it is. At least the 4,000th was an Englander...
Even his (her?) entry point is boring: it's the "backstabber" cartoon from the 157th post, currently the most popular one on GBFOS. You may or may not be surprised to learn that it is the 29th result in a Google Images search for that keyword, and even higher (6th!) for "backstabber cartoon". You also may or may not recall that the 5,000th visitor also arrived via that.
Traffic is down to 3 visitors a day. After a record-shattering 361-hit October, the highest monthly total the blog has reached was 211, in March; in fact, excluding this half-done June, the past seven months have seen an average of 152.7 hits, which I would have given my back molars for three years ago, but is now just depressing, particularly since so many of them now come via image searches. That's what my artwork blog is for, darnit!
Not including spam, just ten additional comments were added for an average of one every 4.2 posts, the worst average between milestones ever. Familiar faces Sea-of-Green (4 comments), Khaaan! (1) and me (2) reappeared, and three comic book bloggers (including Shelly, who shortly thereafter became the newest addition to the "Backlinkers" list) added their thoughts to what will probably be my last great post.
Along the way, I had a few political cartoons snatched up by the blogosphere, had my first ever professionally illustrated book published, reached 100 cartoons drawn for The Jerusalem Post, performed at my sister's bat mitzvah, did a siyum shas mishnayot, and remained out of steady work.
On to the next thousand!!!!!!

Five-Thousand-Hit Blog ;-P
It took a little over one year for Giant Boogers from Outer Space to get its one thousandth visitor. It took slightly more than half that time to reach two thousand. Three thousand was reached after six months exactly, and just under five months later the four thousandth hit was recorded.
Today? Four months, two weeks and one day since that last milestone (and three years, one month and twenty-five days since we set up shop), GBFOS received it five thousandth visitor.
So take a bow, Denver citizen! You got us here! And you did it while searching Google Images for, apparently, "backstabber". That entry point has gotten interestingly popular over the past four months or so; exhaustive research has placed it at the bottom of the third page of results for that keyword... but, as usual, I'll take it. As a matter of fact, Mr. Denver (or Ms. Denver, as the case may be), you narrowly beat out some fellow (fellowette?) from Mountain View, California, who visited the blog three times in succession yesterday in what was obviously a desperate attempt to corral the honor for themselves.
Down to the non-lies or damned lies: hits-per-day hold steady at an average of 4. After a disappointing four-month stretch, the blog hit a rebound with 285 hits in August (good for fourth-best among the past 12 months), followed by a whopping 361 in October for, once again, a new record. November, on the other hand, will need seven more visitors in the next few hours to surpass July's disappointing total of 129, currently fourth-least over the past year. (I'm beginning to see a pattern here: two months feast, four months famine... I feel like Joseph and the Multicolored Dinner Jacket or something.)
Discounting spam, thirteen more comments were posted here (for an average of one every 2.31 posts, not yet counting this one, between milestones), led with eight by Sea-of-Green. I added four more, and one evelynsaenz contributed another, just to keep things interesting. Slightly.
Along the way, I celebrated the blog's third anniversary, won a bumper sticker design contest and got my first ever big monetary payoff, graduated from my Computer Graphics course, got two pictures featured in another Youtube AMV slideshow, was quoted extensively in a baseball blog, and got a part-time job.
On to the next thousand!!!!!

Four-Thousand-Hit Blog (-3
Today, after two years, nine months and ten days of blogging, and four months and twenty-two days after the last such milestone, Giant Boogers from Outer Space has completed its fourth cycle of one thousand hits! Our milestone man (or possibly woman) hails from Edinburgh, England, and was googling "peter piper master craftsman", which brought us up as the fifth website on the results list. Congratulations, old top, and I hope you found out just what Peter Piper was a master at crafting! (Barrels for pickling pepper, perhaps?)
Hits-per-day are up to 4, and while March passed November of '08 as GBFOS's busiest month by 14 hits, and then April followed that up with an outstanding 347, monthly visits have fallen to some of the lowest totals in years. I need more Englishmen searching for Peter Piper on Google.
Twenty-nine more comments have been posted here (for an average of one every 1.69 posts, not yet counting this one, since the third square root of one million), led with fifteen by Sea-of-Green, who's taken a break from blogging to finish her second novel (go, Sea!). I chipped in with eleven of my own, SallyP from GLBF! added a pair, and Khaaan! showed some life with another bewilderingly random comment five days ago.
Along the way, I had a picture featured in a YouTube AMV slideshow, got a personal e-mail account, saw a lion charging in real life, completed my second fan fiction, parted ways with my employer, got in touch with a long-lost friend, finished the Illustrator section of my course, got employed with The Jeruslem Post, and started up a new blog.

Twenty-nine more comments have been posted here (for an average of one every 1.69 posts, not yet counting this one, since the third square root of one million), led with fifteen by Sea-of-Green, who's taken a break from blogging to finish her second novel (go, Sea!). I chipped in with eleven of my own, SallyP from GLBF! added a pair, and Khaaan! showed some life with another bewilderingly random comment five days ago.
Along the way, I had a picture featured in a YouTube AMV slideshow, got a personal e-mail account, saw a lion charging in real life, completed my second fan fiction, parted ways with my employer, got in touch with a long-lost friend, finished the Illustrator section of my course, got employed with The Jeruslem Post, and started up a new blog.
On to the next thousand!!!!

What Blogger means to me
Or more accurately, what did Blogger do for me? That is the subject of today's post.
I'll be honest with you: so far, Blogger has not changed my life. But it gave me something to do, at a time when I sorely needed such a thing.
I began blogging in October of 2006. Twelfth grade--graduation year--had just started, and the pressure, while not at full tilt, was beginning to build. I was driving my friends up the wall more than usual. I needed an outlet for all my insane random energy.
So I sez to myself, I sez, "Why not start a blog?"
And I did.
And you know what? It was fun. And it worked.
As "The Blog of Ultimate Randomness", Giant Boogers from Outer Space gave me a venue to vent my pent-up frustration and stress in the form of off-the-wall, meaningless babble. This continued for a very long time with very much to say, all sound and fury signifying nothing (or something like that). It took, in fact, ten months--and sixty-seven posts--for the out-of-control randomness to die down. Since then, its been a bit more controlled, but no less subdued. Along the way, I have matured (slightly), along with Blogger. I've even started up a secondary blog, devoted exclusively to my artwork, that may eventually one day help me find gainful employment in the field. There's been some stuff to criticize here, but also a lot to admire.
So happy 10th birthday, www.blogger.com. You've earned it.

Post-Pessach Mega Post
- I went to a zoo for the first time in years and had a blast. Penguin feeding, elephant mahouts, humongous rhinoceri and ants feeding on a dead millipede in the parking lot were some of the highlights; but the most thrilling one happened at the lion enclosure. A male and his mate were enjoying a siesta when a completely clueless peahen landed at the other end and squawked loudly. Annoyed, the lion popped his head up and swiveled it like a periscope. What unfolded over the next several minutes was pure eye candy: a lion slowly stalking its prey. Step by step, it crept closer and closer to the oblivious bird, until it stood only a few feet away, with the peahen directly between him and us--front row seats in every sense of the word. After a few breathless seconds, the lion charged.
Even though there was a ditch and an electric fence separating us, my brain automotically got its Primeval Panic button pressed. I must have blacked out for a split second, because try as I might I don't remember actually seeing the peahen take off--but it did, just in the nick of time. [pause] I saw a lion charging in real life. - Another animal spotted at the zoo was a green ring-necked cockatoo. I mention this because one of his Wickersham cousins has been by us for the past three days while his owners (friends of ours) went trippin'. His name's Shrek ('cause he's green, which ain't easy) and his English vocabulary consists of "Shabbat Shalom", "Shrek", and "hello". We've also been petsitting their dog, which I can most certainly do without.
- Over at the ISS, I've continued to roll along, with a mockery of the "2 Girls 1 Cup" concept (and no, I have not seen the video) and a surreal article about anti-anti-hero Marc E. Nibbleshvitz, which I hope to turn into a running series. Watch that space.
- I'm way past the stage of ruing the day I randomly slapped that blowfish picture into the blog. Sure, it attracts hundreds upon hundreds of hits, but I really have absolutely zero idea why. This bugs me no end.

But not for the IsraTimes, until they resume sending me their issues, because I feel that some compensation is due for me.

Three-Thousand-Hit Blog 8-/
Today, after two years, four months and sixteen days of blogging, and exactly six months after the second thousand hits, Giant Boogers from Outer Space has gotten another additional one thousand hits and has reached the big 3K! So let's give a big hand to the anonymous feller from Albany, NY, who is not only the 3,000th visitor but also the very first one to arrive here via the Bill Stickers post.
Hits-per-day dropped to 3, and while this past November scooped the honor of being the second-busiest month here after June '08--and July '08, last noted as the silver medalist, was passed by two others as well--monthly totals overall have tumbled drastically since then. Still, February is poised to pass the lowest-scoring month since (August) with 13 more hits in the remaining eight days, including today. Personally, my visits have also dropped ever lower, to possibly an average of once a week, if even that. Average visit lengths also dropped, to a dismal 19 seconds, just 2 over the average of the first thousand, but I'm going to discount that now that an e-mail convesation with SiteMeter has revealed that it's definitely not an accurate measurement.
Not counting spam, fifty-five more comments have been posted here (for an average of one every one point nine oh nine oh nine oh nine etc. posts, not yet counting this one, past Y2K-Y), led with an astonishing thirty-one by GBFOS's first--and so far only--Follower, Sea_of_Green, sixteen more by me (bringing my overall total to thirty), four more by the indomitable mister Khaaan!, and two by Kurt Busiek, GBFOS's first celebrity commenter, plus two single-timers. Eric, meanwhile, seems to have gone AWOL, on his blog as well as mine.
Along the way, I finished runner-up in another online art contest, celebrated the blog's second anniversary, landed on another links list, finally got credited in the magazine that publishes me, enrolled in a tertiary educational school, voted in my first elections, finished the PhotoShop section of my course, illustrated a set of bar mitzvah invitations, voted in my first national elections, redislocated my shoulder, and had another humor article published online.

Aaand, once again the UNCG blowfish photo has reverted its source page back to me on Google Images. When I was planning to write this post, it was still attributed to the Benjamin Chinn blog, yet I was still getting hits via searches for the word. In fact, a worrying large percentage of recent entry pages for GBFOS are the archive page containing the pic, or in other words Google Images searches for "blowfish"--45%, in fact. Only 18% are for the homepage, plus another 18 in total for Wieners screw ass. (my most and only successful "bait 'n' switch" post) and the keyword-heavy The last 30 days' etc. (no, you would not believe how many people google the word "boogers" and its attendant permutations and additions). Unfortunately, I can only guesstimate at this stuff because Google changed its algorithms or something, the upshot of which being that Sitemeter can no longer tell what words were fed into the search engine to raise images linking back here--and Google I. accounts for well over half my hits.

Linkage again, I'm afraid
Although the Annotated Pratchett File claims to have been last updated this past February, no new annotations have been added since September '04 ... the pace at which new articles are added to Beyond Hogwarts is slower than a crawl ... in fact, the only site in the "Books" section with any appreciable momentum is ALA.org, which is planning a redesign this fall ... Newsarama has undergone a redesign of its own, which is messy and unattractive ... continuing with the theme, DC Comics' site is also redesigned, with no impact on its performance one way or the other, though now it's more eyecatching ... Dilbert.com is now an independent beta website, much bulkier and slower to load ... speaking of which, Garfield.com just gets more labyrinthine and useless (except, of course, for the daily strips, which are non-useless only in a technical sense) ... Being Five has inexplicably taken a biiig step backward, both in terms of site layout and art. The writing, though, continues being excellent ... Web Sudoku now has forums, and is available also in French, German and Spanish ... remind me to write sometime about the time I babelized American Pie on Lost in Translation. What a hoot ... ICHC has expanded into "Celebrity" and "Lookalikes" sections in addition to "LOLdogs" and "News & Politics" ... This is True looks a lot nicer now without sacrificing the essential details that gave it a whimsily folksy look. ... Disney.com is now the movie equivalent of CN.com, so bye-bye! ... MBTN's relaunch is strictly utilitarian, and not as much fun to read ... FanIQ's become more and more cumbersome and less and less reliable, making using it a chore instead of a pleasure ... mental_floss got a redesign which I initially disliked but have since accepted

Two-Thousand-Hit Blog :-O
Today, after one year, ten months and sixteen days of blogging, and a mere eight months and one day after the first thousand hits, Giant Boogers from Outer Space has gotten an additional one thousand hits and now stands at the big two-oh-oh-oh on the hit counter! So congratulations Mr. Whoever-You-Are from Kansas City, Missouri, US of A--you're the guy who pushed us over the top. We couldn't have done without you.
Nor, may we mention, could we have done it without you finding GBFOS's ass shot, along with three other visitors--including one each from Iran and Saudi Arabia, which raises some ve-e-ry in-ter-est-ing questions. Along the way the blog's "staying power" has risen nine seconds to 27 per hit.
With hits-per-day rising from 2.27 to 4.01 between milestones, I felt secure enough to slacken my rate of visiting my own site, deflating my contributions to the cause; now I guess only a hit or two a week come via me. Record numbers visited in June due to the explicable awardspace "controversy" (281, compared to the previous high of 111 of Feb. '08), and July kicked in a silver-medal effort with 154, mostly due to the inexplicable blowfish phenomenon.
Not counting spam, thirty-one more comments have been posted here (for an average of one every 2.39 posts , not yet counting this one, over the extra Roman-numeral-M), led with eight more by me, seven by the anonymous fellow with the nom de plume of Khaaan!, three more by Eric, two by Rickey Henderson (the only other repeat offender), and eleven by various others, including my buddy Yitzchak.
Along the way, I underwent an appendectomy, got printed in a bigger and better magazine, got an Honorable Mention in yet another TT art contest, got publicated in a one-off for a local newsletter, had a humor article published online, knew the pain of having my place of work vandalized (twice), visited the national military cemetery at Har Herzl for the first time, went to my first professional comedy show, finished my National Service, and turned 19.
On to the next thousand!!

Well, the blowfish craze here appears to be over; after about 100 hits, Google has randomly shifted the URL of the picture to a different blog it appears on (it's got a shared source, the website of the Greensboro campus of the University of North Carolina). Still no word on what the whole fuss was about.

I think I'm about ready to enter "Officially Freaked Out" mode. I mean, this is even worse than that whole awardspace business. Starting with an unknown fella from Houston, Texas, USA at Jul 18 2008 4:11:20 am, 24 (out of the past 28!) hits have come via Google Image searches for "blowfish". They come from Ireland, from Germany, from Denmark and the UK and Norway and Mexico, from Zanesville and Iowa City and Berkeley and San Francisco and Jacksonville Beach, and even Canada--twice! So I ask ye, people of the blogosphere: what has possessed you to bump up my blowfish pic into 7th place on Google's image search page? And why (oh dear sweet Lord why!!!) are you so obsessed with Tetraodontidae all of a sudden????
